Class 2 is a mixed age class from age seven to nine. In addition to Literacy and Numeracy, we follow a topic based curriculum. We believe topic work to be a stimulating approach to learning. A topic may encompass several subjects including History, Geography, Science, Maths, Drama, Music, etc. This approach supports the children’s understanding as they are able to make links between subjects, this reinforces their learning. Themed days, visits and visitors are used to enrich the children’s learning experience.
Topics may include:
- Henry VIII
- Tudor Rich and Poor
- Victorian Children
- Our Local Environment
- A Village in India
- Sandwich Snacks
- Children in World War 2
There are fifteen computers in class 2, and ICT is used at every opportunity to enhance learning across the curriculum. The children have the opportunity to use the computers, video cameras and digital cameras to produce a range of work from photo-stories, to adverts, from databases to spreadsheets. There are support programmes on the computers that the children use on a daily basis to develop basic skills such as spelling and times tables.
In class 2 the children begin to learn French which they will continue through to year 6. As well as receiving regular lessons, the children also enjoy learning through songs, playing games and role play.
As the children move up the children are expected to become more independent and begin to take some responsibility for their learning. Ways in which they will do this may include learning weekly spelling and times tables, and completing homework.
